Early Silver Champleve Dial Verge by Halsted

A 17^th Century English calendar verge with silver champleve dial by Robert Halsted in silver pair cases. Deep full plate fire gilt movement with broad elaborate pierced and engraved pillars. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Hollow fusee winding square on the tapered shaft of the great wheel. Pierced and engraved cock depicting two birds on the table, very small vestigial wings, pierced and engraved foot with irregular edge. Plain steel balance, pierced and engraved plate with arrow indication to the silver regulator disc. Signed silver champleve dial, small circular aperture at six for the gilt date ring. Chased and engraved centre depicting drums, flags and weapons, Roman and Arabic numerals, fine blue steel tulip and poker hands. Plain silver pair cases, silver pendant and ring bow, split bezel for the glass. The outer with five joint square hinge, early trapped button to the case latch spring.

Silver Pair Cased Verge with Owner’s Name

An 18^th Century English verge, the dial bearing the original owners name, in silver pair cases. Full plate fire gilt movement with round pillars. Pierced and engraved cock, silver regulator disc. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Unusual fully restored white enamel dial, the hour numerals replaced with the name of the original owner, “Thomas Machan”. Arabic numerals for the five minute markings, blue steel beetle and poker hands. Plain silver pair cases, silver pendant and bow, the inner with maker’s mark “TO”. Purpose made silver outer case hallmarked 1838.

An 18^th Century English verge with subsidiary seconds in gilt metal pair cases. Full plate fire gilt movement with turned pillars. Pierced and engraved cock, silver regulator disc. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Lateral steel stop lever acting on the contrate wheel. White enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, and Arabic numerals, blue steel hands. Gilt metal pair cases, gilt pendant and bow, the inner bearing marks intended to resemble hallmarks.

An early example of a verge with subsidiary seconds. Although some makers introduced watches with seconds shortly after the balance spring was introduced the practice was largely abandoned as the verge escapement was not accurate enough. The seconds subsidiary on this watch is not exactly at 6 o'clock, its position dictated by the contrate wheel pinion

A late 18^th Century English centre seconds cylinder in a gilt consular case. Full plate fire gilt movement, signed and numbered gilt dust cover pierced to reveal the regulator disc and endstone. Pierced and engraved masked cock with large diamond endstone in a blue steel setting, silver regulator disc. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Polished steel cylinder with original banking pin, unusually large brass escape wheel. White enamel dial with centre seconds, Roman numerals and fine seconds track at the edge. Gold hands, the seconds situated between the minute and hour hands. Plain gilt metal consular case both back and front bezel opening on the same hinge, dust proof shuts. Inner dome cut away to reveal the dust cover, maker’s mark “GMR”

Rare Gold Calendar Fob

A rare gold 18th Century fob showing day and date in the form of a small pocket watch. White enamel dial with black Arabic numerals for the day of the month and red abbreviation in French for the day of the week. Decorative gold beetle hands. Gold case in the form of a pocket watch, engraved and engine turned back, gold push pendant. Depressing the pendant moves both hands forward one division. A small button in the band locks the day of the week hand allowing the date to be advanced alone for shorter months.

Pierced and engraved masked cock, diamond endstone in a polished steel setting, silver regulator disc. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Lateral steel stop lever acting on the contrate wheel. White enamel dial with centre seconds, small chapter offset at twelve for the hours and minutes. Roman and Arabic numerals, blue steel sweep seconds hand, gilt hands. Plain 22 carat gold pair cases. The inner with unusual hallmarks, maker’s mark “HLP” in a rectangle and date letter “Y” in a large oval. Contemporary 22 carat gold outer case with Dublin hallmarks, maker’s mark “AN”.

The riverside scene with a church and bridge in the background. In the foreground a fisherman on the bank. Narrow chapter of Arabic numerals, gold hands. Silver pair cases, plain inner with maker’s mark “TC” in a rectangle. Contemporary silver outer case of excellent fit with an engraved monogram. Lateral steel stop lever acting in the contrate wheel.

Large Silver Automata Verge

A large late 18^th Century verge with automated scene in silver pair cases. Full plate gilt fusee movement. Finely pierced and engraved bridge cock with large blue cabochon endstone in a gilt and polished steel setting. Plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring, elaborate polished steel regulator marked “Advance – Retard”. Pentagonal baluster pillars. White enamel dial, the offset chapter of Roman numerals with Arabic numerals at the quarters. Fine decorative gilt hands. Around the chapter a polychrome enamel scene depicting a forest scene of a stag being chased. An oval aperture in the lower half of the scene reveals disc with figures of stags, hunters and dogs painted on it. As the watch runs the figures pass across the oval representing a hunt. Large plain silver pair cases, long silver pendant and bow.

A late 18^th Century English verge with unusual painted dial in silver pair cases. Full plate fire gilt fusee movement with turned pillars. Pierced and engraved masked cock, engraved foot and plate for the silver regulator disc. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Unusual enamel dial painted wit a rural scene, the time shown on a small chapter of Roman numerals on the clock tower of a church in the foreground. Two gentlemen are depicted shaking hands on the path leading to the church, gravestones on either side. Behind them a windmill stands beside a river. Matching plain silver pair cases, silver pendant and bow, lateral steel stop lever, maker’s mark “SB” in a rectangle.

Rare Diamond Set Visible Balance Pendant Watch

A small early 19^th Century Swiss watch with visible diamond set balance in a gold and enamel diamond set shield shaped case. The unusual full plate cylinder movement following the form of the case with the balance visible on the front. Very slender bar supporting the diamond endstone, four arm balance bearing four small diamonds. The balance above a blue steel ground decorated with a polished steel cross. Below the balance a small white enamel dial of Arabic numerals, blue steel hands. Blue and white champleve enamel mask bearing two serpents frame the balance and dial. Rock crystal cabochon protecting the dial and balance. The front and back borders of the case set with graduated diamonds of varying cuts, diamond set gold bow. Hinged gold back, polychrome enamel floral decoration on translucent dark blue enamel over an engine turned ground. Under the lid the winding, setting and adjusting squares. Slender gold key set with three diamonds, the top reflecting the shape of the case. Small red morocco presentation box.
