Silver Pair Cased Windmill Automaton

A late 18^th Century English verge with windmill automaton dial in silver pair cases. Full plate fire gilt movement with fusee and chain. Pierced and engraved cock, silver regulator disc. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. White enamel dial, the centre with a polychrome enamel scene of a central windmill, its gold sails rotating on the contrate wheel arbor situated below twelve. The riverside scene with a church and bridge in the background. In the foreground a fisherman on the bank. Narrow chapter of Arabic numerals, gold hands. Silver pair cases, plain inner with maker’s mark “TC” in a rectangle. Contemporary silver outer case of excellent fit with an engraved monogram. Lateral steel stop lever acting in the contrate wheel.

Large Silver Automata Verge

A large late 18^th Century verge with automated scene in silver pair cases. Full plate gilt fusee movement. Finely pierced and engraved bridge cock with large blue cabochon endstone in a gilt and polished steel setting. Plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring, elaborate polished steel regulator marked “Advance – Retard”. Pentagonal baluster pillars. White enamel dial, the offset chapter of Roman numerals with Arabic numerals at the quarters. Fine decorative gilt hands. Around the chapter a polychrome enamel scene depicting a forest scene of a stag being chased. An oval aperture in the lower half of the scene reveals disc with figures of stags, hunters and dogs painted on it. As the watch runs the figures pass across the oval representing a hunt. Large plain silver pair cases, long silver pendant and bow.

Rare Skeletonised Quarter Repeating Cylinder

An unusual late 18^th Century Swiss skeletonised quarter repeating cylinder in a silver open face case. Slim keywind skeletonised gilt movement with blue steel bridges with polished steel oil sinks visible through the dial. Gold crossed out wheels for both going and repeat trains. Gilt suspended going barrel pierced and engraved on the dial side to reveal the blue steel spring. The blue steel spring for the repeating also visible under a blue steel bridge. Crossed out gold motion work. Polished steel bridge cock, polished steel regulator below the plain three arm gold balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Polished steel cylinder, steel escape wheel. Push pendant quarter repeating, visible polished steel repeating work above the plate. Two polished steel hammers visible from the front striking two steel gongs under the dial. White enamel ring dial, glazed centre in a gold bezel, Arabic numerals, blue steel Breguet hands. Engine turned silver open face case, wound and set through the sprung glazed cuvette with gilt metal bezel.

A late 18^th Century English verge with unusual painted dial in silver pair cases. Full plate fire gilt fusee movement with turned pillars. Pierced and engraved masked cock, engraved foot and plate for the silver regulator disc. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Unusual enamel dial painted wit a rural scene, the time shown on a small chapter of Roman numerals on the clock tower of a church in the foreground. Two gentlemen are depicted shaking hands on the path leading to the church, gravestones on either side. Behind them a windmill stands beside a river. Matching plain silver pair cases, silver pendant and bow, lateral steel stop lever, maker’s mark “SB” in a rectangle.

Wound through the signed white enamel dial, subsidiaries for seconds, date and day in French. Arabic numerals, gilt subsidiary hands, blue steel hands. Unusual drum shaped plain silver open face case, the top plate of the movement almost as large a the dial plate, movement secured by two screws. The back with maker’s mark “J – B over “M” in a diamond and French hallmarks.

Engraved cock with diamond endstone in a polished steel setting, plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Earnshaw type spring detent escapement, the detent mounted on a long curved gilt arm to allow fine adjustment by a screw. Escape pivots with endstones. Signed and numbered white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel seconds hand, gilt hands. Purpose made engine turned silver open face case hallmarked London 1839. Maker’s mark “CBH” and number corresponding to that on the movement.

Ribbed middle, small button in the pendant to open the front bezel.
