Signed and numbered white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel half hunter hands. Plain 18 carat half hunter case with blue enamel chapter ring. Gold cuvette, maker’s mark “JW” in an oval and number corresponding to that on the movement.

Unusual Night Light Watch Holder

An unusual late 19^th Century German watch holder and night light in the form of a gas lamp post. Cast square base and body. The square lamp at the top of the post with clear glass candle holder. The cast hipped roof pierced to allow a small candle to burn inside. Small wire hook just below the lamp to hang the watch. (Watch not included)

A most interesting and unusual piece. It is doubtful that the candle would have lasted the whole night. As a modern replacement a small LED could probably be used in its place

Plain cock with polished steel regulator. plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Polished steel cylinder, steel escape wheel. white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Plain nickle open face case, the back engraved with the cartoon character Ally Sloper above ” A. Sloper. F.O.M.” (Friend of Man). The cuvette engraved “ally Sloper's Half Holiday.

These watches were given as prizes by the British comics magazine, Ally Sloper's Half Holiday. Published weekly from 1884 to 1916 by “The Sloperies”, 99 Shoe Lane, London.

A late 19^th Century Swiss musical watch in a large silver full hunter case. Keyless nickelled musical movement with very large going barrel playing at will or on the hour. Nickelled pinned barrel with polished steel comb of 30 graduated tignes. Under this a circular gilt keyless cylinder watch movement offset towards the pendant. Puce enamel dial decorate with musical instruments, offset white chapter with Roman numerals, gilt hands. Substantial large silver full hunter case, glazed clip on cuvette to reveal the mechanism, lateral silver slide in the band to play the music. Both the musical and watch movements are wound by the crown. When the pin above the crown is depressed the watch is wound, when not, the music is wound.

Silver and Enamel Singing Bird Box

A late 19^th Century Swiss automated singing bird in a silver and enamel box. Brass going barrel movement keywound through the base. Small bellows and piston mechanism provides air to a variable whistle to mimic birdsong operated by a system of cams and levers. The bird covered with multi-coloured feathered plumage, iridescent highlights to bib and wings. Moving the pull at the side of the box causes the oval lid to open and the bird to hinge into an upright position, rising through chased and pierced gilt grille. While playing the automated bird moves its bone beak, flaps its wings, bobs its tail feather and moves from side-to-side, synchronised to the continuous birdsong. Unusual silver box enamelled on all faces apart from the base. The four sides with polychrome enamel landscapes and central oval cartouches depicting cherubs. The top with polychrome enamel depicting goddesses and cherubs at the four corners. Gilt frame to the polychrome enamel oval lid with two cherubs and doves. Key wound through the plain base, key in the shape of a bird.

Small white enamel dial with black Arabic numerals, the 12 o’clock marking in red, gilt minute markings and hands. The gold case constructed in three parts all decorated with translucent light blue enamel over an engine turned ground. The middle set with four small diamonds. The hemispheres of engraved gold foliate decoration set with very small diamonds. The watch is wound and set by turning the top hemisphere of the case in relation to the lower hemisphere. Suspended from a short gold chain from a plain gold bar, pin with safety catch. In a blue velvet lined blue presentation box.

The case is constructed in three parts, the gold middle with a row of diamonds The two gold hemispheres with applied gold foliate decoration set with diamonds on an engine turned ground. Between the foliate decoration shaded translucent and red enamel. The watch wound and set by turning the top hemisphere of the case in relation to the lower hemisphere. Fine matching diamond set gold and enamel brooch formed to resemble leaves and a flower. In a shaped red morocco gilt decorated presentation case lined with black velvet.

Push button minute repeating on two polished steel gongs, visible centrifugal regulator to the repeating train. White enamel dial with flyback centre seconds chronograph, subsidiary seconds, Arabic numerals, decorative pierced gilt hands. Substantial plain 14 carat full hunter gold case. Large button at six o’clock for the minute repeat and a smaller button at two o’clock for the flyback chronograph. Gold cuvette engraved with details of the watch and medals won.
