Description

An unusual small mid 17th Century quartz crystal octagonal watch case.  Purpose made early 18th Century full plate oval fire gilt movement with turned baluster pillars.  Pierced and engraved masked cock, pierced and engraved foot and plate for the silver regulator disc. Fusee and chain with ratchet and click barrel setup between the plates. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring.  Original engraved octagonal gilt dial plate, purpose made silver and silver gilt champleve dial engraved “London”, Roman and Arabic numerals, gilt beetle and poker hands.  Small octagonal smoky quartz crystal case, the body with an oval hollow to accommodate the movement.  Faceted back and cover for the dial, decorative engraved octagonal frames, plain gilt loop pendant.

An attractive unusual case in fine condition.  An interesting example where a more modern movement has been made for a cherished case rather than updating the existing one with a hairspring
