Description

An unusual 19th Century French striking clock in an ormolu case supported by bronze bears.  Small circular brass eight day movement stamped “JD”.  Two going barrels.  Rear mounted platform, plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring.  Polished steel cylinder, steel escape wheel.  Hour and half hour striking on a small bell.  Engraved gilt dial with Roman numerals, blue steel hands.  Oval ormolu base on which stand two bronze bears supporting the circular ormolu clock case.  Lying on top of the clock a third bronze bear holding a gilt tapping screw and wearing an apron.  One of the bears at the base also wearing an apron from which hangs a hammer, the other bear with an axe.

An unusual clock with very well modelled bronze figures.  The amusing theatrical bears apparently dressed as builders reminiscent of Russian bears
