Description

An early 19th Century Swiss cylinder in an exceptional and rare pearl encrusted gold open face case.  Unusual gilt keywind movement with going barrel, the balance in circular cutout in the plate.  Plain sector cock with polished steel regulator, plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring.  Polished steel cylinder, steel escape wheel.  Unusual gold engine turned dial, Roman numerals and minute markings formed from small split pearls, gold Breguet hands.  Fine gold consular case encrusted with graduated split pearls in a spiral floral pattern.  The background of the design filled with many hundreds of tiny split pearls entirely covering the case.  Pearl set pendant and bow.  Fitted in a red morocco case lined with blue velvet.

A rare and attractive watch in excellent overall condition.  A real “Tour de force” of craftsmanship even extending to setting the numerals on the dial with split pearls.  A similar watch in the Carnegie Museum by the same makers has a slightly less detailed design.
