Description

A late 19th Century watch stand in the form of a bow top chest decorated in tortoiseshell, bone and ivory.  Constructed of sandalwood, the top hinged along one short edge. Hinged stand for the watch, 55 mm velvet lined opening with an engraved ivory mask.  Wooden stay to the stand and below a compartment with a hollow to store another watch.  Plated hinges and lock with pierced steel key.  The box veneered in tortoiseshell decorated with ivory straps, borders and delicate filigree panels all secured by ivory pins.  Supported on four claw feet.

Probably from Vishakapatnam in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh which is famous for tortoiseshell covered jewel boxes, in combination with ivory and bone.   The designs used include fine geometrical patterns, epic figures, and animals fringed by floral patterns.
