Description

An 18th Century verge by Windmills in gold pair case set with a cornelian.  Deep full plate fire gilt movement with Egyptian pillars.  Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Pierced and engraved winged cock with mask, pierced and engraved foot.  Plain gilt balance, silver regulator disc.  Fine white enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, blue steel beetle and poker hands. Plain gold inner case, gold pendant and stirrup bow, number corresponding to that on the movement.  Gold outer case, the back set with a cabochon cornelian stone.

In excellent overall condition.  Close inspection shows that the dial is that originally fitted rather than a replacement for a champleve one.  It is a fine early example.  Thomas Windmills, son of Joseph.  Apprenticed 1686, free of the clockmakers Company 1695 and Master 1719 – 32
