Description

A late 17th Century English verge alarm in gilt metal pair cases.  Deep full plate fire gilt movement with five turned baluster pillars.  Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates.  Pierced and engraved winged cock with mask, pierced and engraved foot.  Plain steel balance, the arms shaped to allow it to clear the winding square, silver regulator disc.  The alarm striking a bell in the case with two polished steel hammers.  Engraved resting barrel, blue steel stopwork.   Fine later white enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, small central white enamel disc set by a female square below the twelve. Fine gold beetle and poker hands, small tail of the hour hand indicating the alarm set time.  Unusual pierced and engraved gilt metal pair cases, the inner case constructed without a bezel and the glass fitted to the outer case.

An interesting example a an early movement, its life extended by having a new case and dial made for it about seventy years later.  Simon Decharmes, 1688, free of the Clockmakers Company 1691 – 1730
