A fine large late 18th Century English verge alarm with regulator dial in an engraved gilt metal consular case.

Description

A fine large late 18th Century English verge alarm with regulator dial in an engraved gilt metal consular case.  Large full plate fire gilt movement with five pillars, fusee and chain, resting barrel for the alarm.  Pierced and engraved masked cock, silver regulator disc.  Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Blue steel stopwork to the alarm which strikes on a large bell with two polished steel hammers.  Lateral steel stop lever acting on a disc mounted on the seconds arbor.  Signed white enamel regulator dial, large central hand for the minutes with Arabic numerals and the hours at twelve with Roman numerals.  The subsidiary for seconds at four and alarm set hand at eight, fine gilt arrow hands.  Large gilt metal consular case, the front bezel decoratively chased and engraved.  The back with a pierced chased and engraved border to allow the bell to sound clearly.  Shutters to the winding apertures operated by a slide close to the pendant.

An attractive large English coachwatch.  William Carpenter, free of the Clockmakers Company 1770 – 1805 made fine clocks and automata for the far eastern market
