Antiquorum’s auction of “Important Modern and Vintage Timepieces” brought a total of HK$30.8 million, or £2.57 million, at the beginning of February in Hong Kong, headlined by several Patek Philippe specimens, the auctioneer has revealed.

Recently a prized and precious memento was taken to an antique valuation day at a Perthshire garden centre, but this particular item stood out from the rest as it revealed an unlikely friendship in its history.

The iconic American baseball player, Babe Ruth, received a pocket watch in 1923 as part of winning that year’s World Series championship. For decades it was thought to have been lost in time, pardon the pun, as no one knew its whereabouts. However, in January of 2014 it was reported that it has been found and was arriving in New York City, to be sold at auction, where it was estimated it would reach at least $750,000 (£477,011).
