Swiss Patent 24 Hour Dial Silver Watch

A late 19^th Century Swiss cylinder with unusual 24 hour dial in a silver engine turned open face case. Gilt three quarter plate keywind movement with going barrel. Plain cock with polished steel regulator, plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Polished steel cylinder, steel escape wheel. Unusual dial, silvered mask marked “Patent”, with eleven circular apertures and small seconds subsidiary at six o’clock, blue steel hands. The apertures in the mask either show black Roman numerals from one to twelve or red Arabic numerals thirteen to twenty four on a white enamel ring. The indication is changed by a silver slide in the band of the case. Engine turned silver open face case with ribbed middle, wound and set through the silver cuvette

Large Silver Patent 8 Day Swiss Lever

A very large late 19^th Century Swiss lever watch of 8 days duration in a silver open face case and travelling case. Reversed three quarter plate gilt keyless movement. Compensation balance with blue steel overcoil hairspring. Polished steel index adjusted by removing the front bezel. Club tooth straight line lever escapement. Opening the back single cover reveals an open centrally placed barrel with a visible blue steel mainspring under a glass, almost the diameter of the movement, wound by a folding key. In the centre a brass thumb wheel is used to set the hands. Large white enamel dial with bold Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Substantial large plain silver open face case, maker's mark “HG” in an oval. In a fitted red morocco case lined with velvet, signs of an easel stand, now lacking.

Jacot and Bovet took out the Swiss patent for this mechanism (No 496) in February 1896. Although the hallmark pre-dates the patent, the case is undoubtedly original to the movement. See Technique and History of the Swiss Watch plate 144 for a similar watch

A late 19th Century Swiss cylinder clock with a view of Lake Geneva on the dial. Keywind bar movement with suspended going barrel. Plain cock with blue steel regulator, plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Polished steel cylinder, steel escape wheel. White enamel dial with a monochrome view over Lake Geneva depicting the bridge and buildings on the far bank., mountains in the background. Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Heavy circular brass case suitable for use as a paperweight and also with sliding dovetail mount to enable the clock to be hung on the wall. Very thick bevelled flat glass.

Gilt Metal and Porcelain Watch Decoration

A large late 19th Century toy or decoration in the form of a watch. Hinged circular gilt metal frame set with two convex porcelain covers. The front with a representation of a watch dial, the numeral in cartouches at the edge. White centre with polychrome floral decoration. The back gilt in colour with a raised geometric pattern. The inner faces white, again with polychrome floral decoration. Tapered gilt metal pendant with fixed bow.

A rare and attractive piece. Apparently originally sold as a Christmas tree decoration.

Circular white enamel dial with Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Unusual heart shaped case, the half round frame of chased and engraved floral repousse work, makers mark “E.L” in a rectangle. Silver wire easel stand. Signed octagonal black morocco cover fitted case with two hinged doors. Fitted lined dark blue velvet interior.

Gold Ball Watch

A fine late 19th Century Swiss cylinder ball watch and matching chain. Unusual keyless gilt movement constructed with the train wheels above the going barrel. Plain cock with polished steel regulator. Plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Polished steel cylinder, steel escape wheel. Small white enamel dial with blue Arabic numerals, the 12 o'clock marking in red, gilt minute markings and hands. The case is constructed in three parts, the gold middle with applied gold bead decoration. The two gold hemispheres with applied gold wire decoration. Gold hand set button and ring pendant. The watch is wound and set by turning the top hemisphere of the case in relation to the lower hemisphere. Black fabric cord with gilt fastener.

A late 19^th Century lever in a rare reversible cabriolet gold hunter pair case. Damascened nickelled three quarter plate keyless movement with going barrel. Plain cock with polished steel regulator, compensation balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Club foot lever escapement. Signed white enamel dial, subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel Breguet hands. Rare 18 carat gold cabriolet case which can be used either as a full hunter or as an open face. The inner gold case with engine turned and florally engraved back and engine turned middle, gold cuvette. This can be used on its own or placed in the three section gold outer case with either the dial or back visible. When the dial is shown the watch still appears to be a conventional open face watch with the engraved back depicting a couple in a garden, Alternatively with the back of the inner visible the watch becomes a full hunter, the winding crown serving to open the sprung front cover.

Horn Singing Bird Box

A late 19^th Century French automated singing bird in a polished horn box. Brass going barrel movement keywound through the base. Small bellows and piston mechanism provides air to a variable whistle to mimic birdsong operated by a system of cams and levers. The bird covered with multi-coloured feathered plumage, iridescent highlights to bib and wings. Moving the gilt lateral slide on the front of the box causes the oval lid to open and the bird to hinge into an upright position, rising through chased and pierced gilt grille. While playing the automated bird moves its bone beak, flaps its wings and moves from side-to-side, synchronised to the continuous birdsong. Polished horn box, a compartment at the back with a hinged horn lid. Oval gilt hinged cover to the bird engraved with a bird in a foliate engraved border.

Plain back with vacant oval cartouche, wound and set through the silver cuvette, maker's mark “LJ” in a rectangle.
