A mid 17th Century pre-balance spring oval verge in a gilt oval case. Deep full plate fire gilt movement with slender baluster pillars. Fusee and gut, the barrel setup on the top plate with a decorative pierced and engraved click, blue steel spring and ratchet wheel. Pierced and engraved balance cock of irregular shape secured by tenon and pin. Three wheel going train. Finely engraved gilt oval dial, four lugs locating into the case. Fitted to the movement by three bayonet lugs and secured by a single blue steel swing latch. Small engraved chapter of Roman numerals above which are depicted Adam and Eve. Inside the chapter an engraved landscape, single blue steel hand. Plain gilt oval case with parallel sides, engraved beads at top and bottom. Domed base and hinged cover, cast decorative gilt pendant and ring bow.

In remarkably fine original condition. The balance cock has not been altered to accommodate a balance spring or secured by a screw. The train pivots have not been "improved" by providing oil sinks. Although not signed the watch is probably of French origin, a space seems to have been left on the plate for a signature but not engraved at the time. See "Watches" by Clutton & Daniels, illustration 63 fro a similar watch with rose engraving on the plate signed "R Chappele".

Central aperture revealing the digital indication of minutes, a circular aperture above showing the hours and below these a small subsidiary seconds dial. The minutes change instantaneously as the seconds hand passes 60. Unusual 14 carat full hunter case, the front cover with apertures to reveal the hours and minutes. Gilt metal cuvette with dedication dated 1885.

Unusual gilt metal case in the form of a roulette wheel, the outer section with alternate red and black numerals and a single green zero, rotating freely. The game can be played by holding the centre with the watch between thumb and finger while running the edge of the wheel along a surface, the numeral indicated by a small arrow.

Winding through the fully restored white enamel dial, Arabic numerals, gold Breguet hands. The movement housed in the circular gold centre section, its back decorated in dark blue translucent enamel over an engine turned ground surrounded by a band of white enamel. The front bezel set with split pearls. Two outer octagonal frames separated by a row of small pearls, a small gold ring at the top for a chain. Between the frame and the body of the case delicate gold filigree wire work.

Under the back cover the silvered and gilt full calender with central moonphase indication. The days of the week and date shown by a single gold hand, the month in a rectangular aperture. Decoratively engraved double sided 18 carat full hunter case. The position of the bow determining which of the two covers is opened by depressing the button in the pendant.

Made by the firm of Nicole Nielsen who manufactured for many of the watchmaking firms in the second half of the 19th Century, most notably Dent. Adolphe Nicole took out the patent for keyless winding in 1844. Repeating watches by Nicole Nielsen are uncommon.

An unusual Swiss two day lever with power reserve indication in a gilt desk clock. Keyless damascened nickelled bar movement with going barrel. Plain cock with polished steel micrometer regulator. Compensation balance with blue steel overcoil hairspring. Club foot lever escapement. Signed silvered dial with applied gilt batons, subsidiaries for seconds and power reserve marked for 50 hours, gilt hands. Fitted in a marine chronometer tub, the screw back weighted to keep the dial horizontal. Wound and set by a crown at 12 o'clock, the movement under a glazed cover. Unusually mounted in a in a gilt brass ring resembling gimbals, complete with locking detent. The posts supporting the ring mounted on a silver coloured square plate fixed to an oak base bearing the Longines logo. Oak keep box with the Longines logo repeated on the lid, both base and box numbered.
