Early Gilt Oval Verge


A mid 17th Century pre-balance spring oval verge in a gilt oval case. Deep full plate fire gilt movement with slender baluster pillars. Fusee and gut, the barrel setup on the top plate with a decorative pierced and engraved click, blue steel spring and ratchet wheel. Pierced and engraved balance cock of irregular shape secured by tenon and pin. Three wheel going train. Finely engraved gilt oval dial, four lugs locating into the case. Fitted to the movement by three bayonet lugs and secured by a single blue steel swing latch. Small engraved chapter of Roman numerals above which are depicted Adam and Eve. Inside the chapter an engraved landscape, single blue steel hand. Plain gilt oval case with parallel sides, engraved beads at top and bottom. Domed base and hinged cover, cast decorative gilt pendant and ring bow.

In remarkably fine original condition. The balance cock has not been altered to accommodate a balance spring or secured by a screw. The train pivots have not been "improved" by providing oil sinks. Although not signed the watch is probably of French origin, a space seems to have been left on the plate for a signature but not engraved at the time. Small finely pierced and engraved bridge cock with steel coqueret, plain three arm gilt steel balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Silver regulator dial with blue steel indicator. Long polished steel cylinder, brass escape wheel. Wound through the convex white enamel dial, Arabic numerals, gold hands. Elegant plain red gold case with gold oval pendant and bow.

An elegant watch of the period. Full plate cylinders were uncommon at this time. The watch may be of Scandinavian origin.

A late 19th Century Swiss digital dial lever by IWC in an unusual gold full hunter case. Keyless gilt split three quarter plate movement with IWC mark on the bridge of the going barrel. Plain cock with polished steel regulator. Compensation balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Club foot lever escapement. Fully restored signed white enamel dial marked "Hour - Minutes". Central aperture revealing the digital indication of minutes, a circular aperture above showing the hours and below these a small subsidiary seconds dial. The minutes change instantaneously as the seconds hand passes 60. Unusual 14 carat full hunter case, the front cover with apertures to reveal the hours and minutes. Gilt metal cuvette with dedication dated 1885.

A 20th Century Swiss lever in an unusual gilt and enamel roulette game case. Nickelled three quarter plate 17 jewel keyless movement with going barrel. Plain cock, plain three arm balance with spiral hairspring. Club foot lever escapement. Signed gilt dial with the suits of playing cards at the quarters, black hands. Unusual gilt metal case in the form of a roulette wheel, the outer section with alternate red and black numerals and a single green zero, rotating freely. The game can be played by holding the centre with the watch between thumb and finger while running the edge of the wheel along a surface, the numeral indicated by a small arrow.

Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Pierced and engraved silver bridge cock with an unusual lattice work centre. Plain gilt four arm balance, the arms shaped to accommodate the winding square. Silver regulator disc. Fine signed gold champleve dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, arcaded minute ring. Pierced and engraved centre with an aperture for the date, decorative stone set hands. Pair cases of 20 or 22 carat gold, plain inner with gold stirrup bow , maker's mark "IR", a crown above. Crisp gold repousse outer case, finely chased and engraved, the scene depicting a woman, cherub and soldier, framed by a rococo border.

Polished steel coqueret with a garnet, polished steel regulator on top plate below the plain three arm steel balance. Winding through the fully restored signed white enamel dial, Roman and Arabic numerals, stone set pierced silver hands. Engraved gold case glazed on both sides, the bezels set with small diamantes.

Convex white enamel dial with centre seconds, Roman and Arabic numerals, later blue steel seconds hand, gilt beetle and poker hands. Gilt metal pair cases, plain inner, maker's mark "WC". Outer case with engraved gilt bezels, the front set with a row of green paste stones alternating with split pearls. The back set with a finely painted polychrome enamel scene depicting a woman and two young children.

A late 18th Century Swiss cylinder in an unusual gold and enamel filigree case. Unusual full plate gilt keywind movement with resting barrel. Sector shaped cock with polished steel coqueret, plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Polished steel cylinder, small brass escape wheel. Winding through the fully restored white enamel dial, Arabic numerals, gold Breguet hands. The movement housed in the circular gold centre section, its back decorated in dark blue translucent enamel over an engine turned ground surrounded by a band of white enamel. The front bezel set with split pearls. Two outer octagonal frames separated by a row of small pearls, a small gold ring at the top for a chain. Between the frame and the body of the case delicate gold filigree wire work.

Matching plain silvered metal pair cases, maker's mark "IR" and number corresponding to that on the movement. The back of polychrome champleve enamel panels on a black ground radiating from the central small green section. Gold cuvette, maker's mark "AW" in an oval.

Transfer work to drive the calendar visible on the plate. White enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, gilt hands. Under the back cover the silvered and gilt full calender with central moonphase indication. The days of the week and date shown by a single gold hand, the month in a rectangular aperture. Decoratively engraved double sided 18 carat full hunter case. The position of the bow determining which of the two covers is opened by depressing the button in the pendant.

Gold slide and cuvette, maker's mark "ATO" in an oval, number corresponding to that on the movement.

Made by the firm of Nicole Nielsen who manufactured for many of the watchmaking firms in the second half of the 19th Century, most notably Dent. Adolphe Nicole took out the patent for keyless winding in 1844. Repeating watches by Nicole Nielsen are uncommon.

Unusual Display Desk Clock by Longines


An unusual Swiss two day lever with power reserve indication in a gilt desk clock. Keyless damascened nickelled bar movement with going barrel. Plain cock with polished steel micrometer regulator. Compensation balance with blue steel overcoil hairspring. Club foot lever escapement. Signed silvered dial with applied gilt batons, subsidiaries for seconds and power reserve marked for 50 hours, gilt hands. Fitted in a marine chronometer tub, the screw back weighted to keep the dial horizontal. Wound and set by a crown at 12 o'clock, the movement under a glazed cover. Unusually mounted in a in a gilt brass ring resembling gimbals, complete with locking detent. The posts supporting the ring mounted on a silver coloured square plate fixed to an oak base bearing the Longines logo. Oak keep box with the Longines logo repeated on the lid, both base and box numbered.

Steel hour and half-hour rack striking work visible on the back plate. Rare large rectangular tourbillion platform visible through a glazed aperture in the top of the case. Long polished steel carriage pivoted under a diagonal polished steel bridge. Compensation balance with spiral hairspring. Club foot lever escapement. Signed plain gilt dial with silvered mask. White enamel chapter ring with Roman numerals, the two winding squares below. Blue steel Breguet hands. Four glass polished brass case with bow fronted glazed door, plain top with square aperture revealing the platform.
