An interesting watch with a unusual features. Chronograph watches were very rarely entered for trials at Kew to obtain a certificate. The extra complication interfered with the timekeeping and made it difficult to obtain the certificate. The layout of the dial is very rare, normally the minute recording dial is situated below the 12 leaving the seconds subsidiary. Attention has also been paid to the performance of the watch with respect to magnetism as it has gold escapement components and an alloy hairspring. The movement has been finished in England where the escapement and balance assembly have been fitted.

An extraordinary luxury item. Most travelling clocks were made as timepieces in leather covered cases. A few were contained in silver cases or had repeating movements which were useful before bedside electric lights were common. Gold examples are very rare, probably because of the considerable amount of gold needed, especially in this instance where a heavy gauge of 18 carat has been used. His Eminence Patrick Cardinal Hayes was born in New York in 1867 and ordained as a priest in the city in 1892. In 1914 he was ordained a Bishop and was an auxiliary Bishop of New York. In 1919 he was appointed Archbishop of New York and was elevated to Cardinal in 1924. He died at the age of 70 in 1938.

Signed white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Arabic numerals, blue steel hands.

Signed __________W Ehrhardt London

Circa 1910

Diameter 46 mm

Condition Very good, the balance staff broken. Lacking seconds hand.

The purpose of this unusual construction is said to be the need to service the watch in the field. Should the balance staff be broken (which would have happened frequently in military use) it could easily be replaced with a new timed assembly and put into beat by unskilled personal due to the design of the cock. William Ehrhardt opened a workshop at 30 Paradise Street, Birmingham in 1855 and in 1862 opened a second manufacturing premise at 26 Augusta Street. From this second address he exhibited watches and instruments at the 1862 International Exhibition in London. The firm moved to larger premises at 72 Great Hampton Street in 1863, and later to Time Works, Barr Street. By 1880 the firm was manufacturing 500 watches a week, some by hand and some by machine because William was fair minded and appreciated that some of his older staff preferred to work with the old methods. By 1898, a shop has been opened in London at which time they advertised that they made 500 patterns in gold and silver ranging in price from £8 to £25 and £1.5 to £5 respectively. The movements can be identified by a winged arrow punch mark on the front plate below the dial.
