Index No. A5901
Early English Sun and Moon Verge

A fine late 17th Century English verge with silver champleve Sun and Moon dial in silver pair cases. Deep full plate fire gilt movement, decorative tulip pillars. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Pierced and engraved cock with small irregular pierced and engraved foot. Plain steel balance, silver regulator disc. Silver champleve dial, Arabic numerals for the minutes, blue steel poker hand. The hours are indicated by a waxed champleve silver disc which rotates once every 24 hours. This is viewed through a semi-circular aperture and has engraved on one half the gold sun and on the other the moon. At the edge of the semi-circle the hours are marked from six through twelve and back to six in Roman numerals. As the sun disappears at the right of the aperture the moon appears at the left. Engraved in the lower half of the dial a depiction of Chronos pulling a chariot. Matching silver pair cases, split bezel, silver ring pendant and bow, square seven joint hinge to the outer. Maker's marks "Io" and "W? To both cases.

Signed __________Edward Orton London

Circa 1685

Diameter 54 mm - Depth 18.5 mm

Condition

==> Case _______ Excellent.

==> Dial ._______ Excellent.

==> Movement __ Excellent.

In fine overall condition. The marks in the case are interesting in that they are repeated on the movement. The cases are marked "W?" above "Io". The pillar plate of the movement is also stamped "Io", in all three instances the "I" being deeply struck. The back of the silver champleve dial is struck "WI" twice. This would appear to be William Jaques mark, one of the most prolific watch case makers of the period. The marks on the back of the dial probably just indicate that he supplied the plate to the engraver with the feet soldered on and the semi-circle cut out. Whether they were put there to show who the plate belonged to or were just practice strikes is not clear. The back of silver champleve dials are almost never marked. The "Io" mark is perhaps even more interesting. It would seem almost certain that this is the watchmakers mark, indicating the watch was supplied to Edward Orton almost complete (unless it is his own mark). Further research would be needed to resolve this. Edward Orton, apprenticed 1680, free of the Clockmakers Company 1687 - 1709. See Pocket Watches by Reinhard Meis page 98 for similar watches.

Rare Silver Mock Pendulum English
Verge

A rare early 18th Century verge with reverse fusee and mock pendulum in silver pair cases. Deep full plate fire gilt movement the broad Egyptian pillars with pierced galleries above. Unusual reversed fusee and chain with ratchet wheel barrel setup between the plates. Engraved winged mock pendulum bridge cock with mask. The gilt bob which is attached to the three arm gilt balance visible through a semi-circular aperture. Signed silver champleve dial with a small aperture in the 60 minute division revealing the blue steel regulator. This adjusts the index via a decorative blue steel arbor which passes through the plates. Roman and Arabic numerals, blue steel beetle and poker hands. Matching silver pair cases, split bezel on the inner, makers mark probably "IB" below a crown.

Signed __________David Lesturgeon London

Circa 1705

Diameter 54 mm - Depth 17.5 mm

Condition

==> Case _______ Very good.

==> Dial ._______ Excellent.

==> Movement __ Excellent although some scuff marks to the mask on the cock.

A very unusual watch with a number of interesting features. The rarest feature is the use of a reversed fusee at this period. It may have been used in order to allow for the regulator on the dial and to place the winding square directly opposite the pendant rather than for the theoretical advantage of decreasing pressure on the arbors of the barrel and fusee. The use of a regulator on the dial is also rare, the decorative blue steel arbor passing through both plates necessitating the non standard train layout. Few English makers used a bridge cock, the engraving and small wings however are typically English. The ratchet setup to the barrel appears original and not a later repair.

A very rare watch in fine condition. Use of a regulator style dial is very uncommon, as are (genuine) Masonic dials of the period. This is the only example we can find of the two features combined. It is a particularly good example incorporating the Sun and Moon, entrance to the Temple of Solomon, dividers, set square, hammer as well as two of the rarer symbols, the beehive and Noah's Ark. The watch is unsigned and more unusually un-numbered. However it has a plain gilt escutcheon fixed to the plate only by two screws which was probably intended to be engraved with the owners name when sold.

A fine piece. Unlike some deck watches this retains its glass and bow and could be used as a pocket watch if so desired. The top plate does not appear to be finished and may have been awaiting a retailers name when sold. The watch does not appear to have been used and this might explain the omission.

Rare Dead Beat Verge

A large rare early 18th Century English dead beat verge of four day duration in a silver open face case together with a matching stagecoach watch case. Large full plate gilt keywind movement, large fusee and barrel allowing the watch to run for four days. Engraved cock with diamond endstone, blue steel Bosley regulator, plain three arm steel balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Rare form of dead beat verge escapement with little recoil. The escape wheel with long slender teeth and verge staff made from two steel cylinders with a flat cut into them joined by a turned brass staff. The tips of the escape wheel fall on the surface of the cylinder where they rest until it fall onto the flat and gives impulse to the balance. Engine turned dial of unusually heavy gauge (approx. 1.5 mm thick) hallmarked Birmingham 1840. Decoratively engraved centre, applied gold Roman numerals, decorative gilt hands. Substantial large engine turned silver open face case with engine turned middle. Hallmarked Birmingham 1847, maker's mark "JH". The watch is accompanied by a stagecoach watch case comprised of a brass bound square mahogany case with hinged flush handle. This houses a drum shaped brass case with bayonet fit bezel, the dial signed "Wregg - London". Now fitted with a later English three quarter plate fusee movement, the various parts of the case are scratched with the name "Wregg". Although it looks small for the movement of the watch the drum would accommodate it. The plugged winding hole and original three fixings are suitably placed. This is not however the original movement for this case.

Circa 1825

Diameter 77 mm - Depth 24 mm

Condition

==> Case _______ Very good, the engine turning slightly worn.

==> Dial ._______ Very good.

==> Movement __ Very good, the gilding faded in places.

An interesting related pair. Wregg apparently specialised in these form of stagecoach watches. The mahogany box has a lock which would stop the movement from being tampered with. The lockable back door is missing - it may have been part of the stagecoach. This would explain the reason the movement is of four day duration - long enough for the coach to reach its destination without the need for attention. A very rare form of escapement in an unusual large four day watch. The inside of the fusee is marked "1825 Wregg". The date of 1825 scratched on the fusee is consistent with design of the cock. The dial was made 15 years later and the case a further 7 years. The back of the silver dial gives an indication of the life of the watch during the 19th Century with marks from watchmakers in Bucharest, Quebec and Philadelphia.

A rare movement. This has been made by the same hands that made repeaters for Breguet. The quarter repeat mechanism is to a design introduced by Breguet in 1810. Using only a single hammer it is quite distinct from other repeaters of the period and matches exactly that of watches by Breguet made between 1810 and 1820. However unlike these watches the movement has a diamond endstone in place of a parachute and temperature compensation curb. See "The Art of Breguet" by George Daniels page 340 for an illustration of the repeat mechanism. It is interesting to speculate whether Breguet was supplying part finished watches for other makers or if the workmen were "moonlighting" without his knowledge. Ganthony was based in London.
