Charles Haley was an eminent and pioneering chronometer maker. He was granted a patent in 1796 for a constant force escapement. Only two of these are known to exist and this piece would appear to have been converted from the constant force to Earnshaw escapement by Haley. At the end of the 18th Century he was appointed by the Select Committee of the House of Commons to report on Mudge's timekeepers and application for a reward. See the Catalogue Watches in the British Museum, Pocket Chronometers, items 54 and 76.

Condition Very good, the balance staff broken. Lacking seconds hand.
An important piece of unusual construction by one of the leading chronometer makers of the 19th Century. John Sweetman Eiffe was one of the first chronometer makers to propose auxiliary compensation to correct for "middle temperature error". He wrote to Sir George Airy, the Astronomer Royal, in 1835 with details of a form of auxiliary compensation. However a patent was awarded to Robert Molyneux for a broadly similar device in 1840. Eiffe was later awarded £300 by the Royal Society for his contribution to compensating for middle temperature error. Few examples of his work survive and he does not appear to have arrived at a final form for his balance. This movement may have been experimental, the duplex escapement a strange choice rather than a spring detent chronometer. There is also a plugged hole between the fusee and barrel, probably for an arbor to drive the train, which could not have been for a going barrel as it is to close to a pillar. A unique chance to own a piece by one of the English pioneers of precision timekeeping. See The Marine Chronometer by Rupert Gould pages 181 - 183 for more detailed information about Eiffe's auxiliary compensation.
