A very attractive and rare movement. Surprisingly few watches were made with glazed sides. Their use allows the mechanism to be protected from dust and the probing fingers of their owners while still allowing it to be viewed. The fine mid 18th Century purpose made dial and case provides an opportunity to buy an example at reduced cost. Maurice Smith, Royal Exchange - apprenticed 1694, free of the Clockmakers Company 1702.

A fine early English alarm. Although not pierced the outer appears to be original. Unlike repeating and clockwatches an alarm only needs to sound when the watch is at rest rather than when worn. It would make sense to leave watch without the outer having wound both trains at night. The plain outer case could then protect the movement from dirt and dust during the day.

Although sold in London (where the retailer has moved and crossed through the original street number) the watch has French markings. The original makers name between the day and date subsidiaries can be read on the dial if held at the correct angle to the light. This reveals that the watch was made by firm Charles Oudin whose founder worked for Breguet.

It is odd that this fine watch is not signed. Another strange feature is that there is a slot in the dial plate and middle of the case for a stop lever. The holes for the arbor are in the movement plates but could never have been used as the fusee wheel passes through the centres. The lack of a seconds dial also indicates a stop lever was never fitted.

These instruments were owned by Roland Skog, a Swedish cabinet maker who moved to Canada after the First World War. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces during the Second World War and afterwards purchased the chronometer and theodolite in London. Returning to Canada he settled as a trapper living alone on the Parsnip River occupying his time by keeping meteorological records and studying the natural world around him. Once a year he would sell his furs at the Hudson Bay trading post at Macleod Lake, a journey taking two weeks by canoe. He was approached by the British Columbia Forest Service to survey the region. He made the box for the chronometer from local birch and fitted it with gimbals of his own manufacture. It appears he also altered the pendant of the case to allow it to fit the gimbals. He also made the tin for the theodolite which he lined with smoked moosehide. By the 1960's the area was being commercially logged and the Parsnip River was flooded to create Lake Willaston. Roland Skog, very disenchanted, was given land overlooking the new reservoir 35 miles from the sawmill town of Mackenzie. There were no roads on his side of the lake where he lived alone in a three room cabin he built himself (See illustration). In the spring of 1980 a pilot noticed there was no smoke coming from the chimney of the cabin and called police to investigate. They found the outline of a body in the grass with potatoes sprouting beside it. It appears that Roland had collapsed and died while carrying the potatoes from a store to his cabin the previous winter. His remains were carried away by animals into the countryside he loved. He gave the instruments to a friend who has written a short biography of Roland Skog's interesting life which is included.
