George Tyler, London (Popes Head Alley, Lombard Street) - apprenticed 1692, free of the Clockmakers Company 1699 - 1723. The representation of the crown on the pillars strongly suggest a Royal connection. As the watch dates from about 1700 it is probable that this is Queen Anne who came to the throne in 1702. It may have been given to her, or from her in commemoration of the coronation.

A rare variation of a champleve dial verge in outstanding condition. Joseph Antram, apprenticed 1696, free of the Clockmakers Company 1706, died 1723 - Watch and Clockmaker to George I. The casemaker's mark appears on both cases for Samuel Bowtell working from 1690 to 1710. Careful examination of the parcel gilt champleve centre shows that the maker has used a standard design (variations of this one are frequently found on watches of the period) and cut away the cartouches. It would seem from comparing many examples that champleve dials and centres were produced by specialist workers and supplied in batches to watchmakers. There appear to be a few common designs for the centres and small dividers between the numerals on the chapters. The engraving on the cock also points to the nature of the watchmaking industry in London early in the 18th Century. The motif used on the table of the cock is quite distinctive (looking like a hot air balloon, it is intended to show a vase). This is often found on watches made by Windmills. It suggests that either the cock was pierced and engraved by the same out worker(s) or that the complete movement was produced in the same workshop as some signed by Windmills.

J P Kroese, Amsterdam, 1742 -1775. This watch is very large for the period and has a champleve dial. It would have been out of fashion when made as most watches were about 50 mm in diameter and fitted with enamel dials. It may have been a special commission to replace a lost or damaged watch from an earlier period.

An interesting high quality Swiss fake of a London made watch. Quare was one of the English makers of the period who were highly regarded on the continent and whose name was sometimes used. Most of the movements bearing a false name are of poor quality, particularly those of Dutch origin. This example is of almost the same high standard as the London made contemporary only revealing its Swiss make in the decorative detail. The pillars, although attractive, are very broad; the "Q" in the signature is hidden by the foot of the cock (although this might occur on any watch); the potence to the crown wheel is fixed by a screw; the mask is set in the middle of the cock (a particularly Swiss feature almost never found on an English watch). The outer repousse case is a good example made by Cochin who worked in Geneva from about 1730 and indicated the watch was still in Switzerland when it was made for the watch.

A very rare and unusual pair of 19th Century gold Swiss verge watches made for the Japanese market. The movements of the watches are almost identical although only one is signed. Full plate gilt fusee movement. Finely pierced and engraved bridge cock with steel coqueret, plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Silver regulator dial with blue steel indicator. The dials are constructed in a similar fashion, both of gilt metal with marking for the hours that can be moved in a slot to adjust the length of the hours. One is marked in Japanese characters, the other in Roman or Arabic numerals. The hours marked in the European convention do not however represent 1 - 12 but show only the hours 4 - 9; once in Roman characters and again in Arabic numerals. The cases also differ in that one is a consular case, the movement hinging out while the other is an open face case with hinged back and bezel. This watch is wound through a gold cuvette while the other winds through the dial. The pendants on the watches also differ, one is rectangular, the other turned. Contained in a small fitted bone box lined with red velvet.

A very rare and unusual pair of watches. The differences between them is almost certainly deliberate allowing the wearer to know which of the two was being worn. They may have been made for one person to use both systems or perhaps a couple, one Japanese and the other European. The Japanese based their method of timekeeping on a Chinese system which is somewhat eccentric, the length of their periods of time altering throughout the year. Each 24 hour day is divided into its two natural sections, day and night. These are then divided into six equal parts. This necessitates allowing mechanical timekeepers to have adjustable markings. Timepieces made for the Japanese market are rare, these are probably unique.

An extremely rare watch. Very few minute repeating watches were made before the middle of the 19th Century. Only a few examples of Swiss minute repeaters made about 1820 are known in addition to those made by Breguet. These are all variations of the continental form of repeating work. The mechanism here is based on Stogden's system, a development from Tompion's repeating work. A larger minute repeater made by Thomas Mudge is known but we believe this may be the only other example of an 18th Century English minute repeater based on this system. The movement is of surprisingly small size (36 mm) to include minute repeating work. In addition the high quality gold and enamel cases are in fine condition.
