An attractive watch. With the
introduction of the balance spring most watches were fitted with a minute hand
as they were more accurate timekeepers. The mock pendulum feature was not only
decorative but gave the owner the impression of good timekeeping by association
with the pendulum used on clocks. This had recently revolutionised the rate
they were able to achieve.

Diameter 53 mm
Condition

==> Dial ._______ Excellent apart from a
hairline crack.
==> Movement __ Excellent.
A very rare watch which uses two different
Patents. One by H Stuart and G Daniels in 1877 which relates mainly to
the form of keyless winding. The other from 1876 by H M Robottom in 1876
describes the mechanism for setting the hands and regulator. The movement
is stamped Stuart & Co. - Patent under the dial.
Regulation of the watch is very fine requiring a full turn of the
crown to move the hand one division. An interesting complication which
allows the watch to be regulated without exposing it to dust. We have not
seen this variation of regulator before and can find no other example of
it.

A very fine and rare piece. We believe
this to be the earliest example of an Arnold marine chronometer with an enamel
dial which is such an attractive feature. It can be seen that &
Son is repeated on the plate. This is almost certainly because the
plate has been cut out and a taller barrel fitted. Arnold probably found
the large balance (which is a very early example of this type) required more
power. The engraver would have only been given the new barrel bridge and
not have realised the word Son was left intact on the plate.
This chronometer represents a piece of horological history in the
development of marine timekeepers which were still very much at the
experimental stage. The opportunity to own such a piece rarely
arises.

In remarkably fine condition this rare piece
is even more unusual as it has watch hands covered by a glass. Most of
these boxes have the dial exposed with the hands either fixed or painted on.
Although these hands can be moved they are fixed at the same angle to
each other. Often regarded purely as toys these pieces may have been used
as patch boxes. See The Artistry of the English Watch
by Cedric Jagger colour plate 14 for a watch with a similar case.
