In remarkably fine original condition. The balance cock has not been altered to accommodate a balance spring or secured by a screw. The train pivots have not been "improved" by providing oil sinks. Although not signed the watch is probably of French origin, a space seems to have been left on the plate for a signature but not engraved at the time. See "Watches" by Clutton & Daniels, illustration 63 for a similar watch with rose engraving on the plate signed "R Chappele".

A very rare and attractive watch. Surprisingly few watches were made with glazed sides. Their use allows the mechanism to be protected from dust and the probing fingers of their owners while still allowing it to be viewed. This example is in very fine condition and the only complete one we have been able to offer for sale.

A high quality movement with the only known example of a gold plated balance spring used by Frodsham. In 1862 Airy and Frodsham discussed methods of preventing balance springs rusting. Frodsham carried out experiments with plating balance springs on marine chronometers and may have included this pocket watch in them. See The Frodshams by Dr. Vaudrey Mercer pages 92 and 93 where this watch is mentioned. In addition to the balance spring the movement is also reverse fusee and has an endstone to the seconds pinion lower pivot. Both these features are very uncommon and demonstrate that the watch should be able to maintain the highest standards of timekeeping.

A fine 16th Century German table clock case which has had the movement replaced in the mid 18th Century. The dial and hands were probably also replaced at this time. The movement appears to be a close copy of the original, the pillars resembling the earlier design and the winding squares in the same place. The mechanical parts of the movement are of better form than the original and the decorative engraved cock and top plate have not been copied. The large steel bell covering the movement seems to have been retained.

A very rare form of escapement in an unusual large four day watch. See "Its About Time" by Chamberlain page 152 for a variation on the verge escapement by Flamenville which is similar to this. The inside of the fusee is marked "1825 Wregg". The date of 1825 scratched on the fusee is consistent with design of the cock. The dial was made 15 years later and the case a further 7 years. It would seem possible from the unusual construction that this was an experimental piece which took some years finish, rather than the case being a later replacement. The back of the silver dial gives an indication of the life of the watch during the 19th Century with marks from watchmakers in Bucharest, Quebec and Philadelphia.
