A rare chance to purchase a pre balance spring watch. The movement undoubtedly dating from the middle of the seventeenth century, in remarkably original and fine condition. However the case may not be original, although it could be, having been later decorated in the late 17th Century in Turkey. Alternatively it may be entirely manufactured in Turkey for the movement.

A rare late 17th Century English with silver champleve dial with an aperture revealing an enamel disc in silver pair cases. Deep full plate fire gilt movement with decorative turned baluster pillars. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Pierced and engraved winged cock with mask, pierced and engraved irregular foot. Plain gilt balance, silver regulator disc. Signed silver champleve dial with arcaded minute ring, Roman and Arabic numerals, later gilt hands. Between the numerals eleven and one an aperture through which can be seen a section of a polychrome enamel disc. This disc has five separate scenes which appear to be drawn from a tale. They are changed by depressing and releasing the push pendant. Plain silver inner case, stirrup bow. The outer case with silver front bezel, the back covered in black shagreen decorated with pique pins. A pipe extends from the front bezel to stop the pendant being pushed to change the scene when in the case. It was probably pushed once a day when the watch was wound.

A rare and unusual watch. The story seems to involve royalty and a member of the clergy who is thrown from a bridge. Due to the aperture in the dial the makers name is split into two, "DEN" to the left and "TAN" to the right. This indicates the champleve dial was a standard type but still used with this unusual feature. Although the arcaded minute ring, normally associated with a slightly later period, suggests it may be a replacement there is no evidence of this under the dial. An old paper placed in the back of the case gives a reference to the maker in Antique Watches by Henry Abbott, plate 14 between 1650 and 1700.

Two things are odd about this watch. The first is probably due to the original cuvette having a dedication, its replacement is marked "18 Foreign .75". The reason for the dial and movement being signed by different makers may be due to the owner wishing to replace the dial and having one made by Benson's.

An unusual watch which bears a resemblance to those made for the Turkish market. The dial is a later replacement. The original would have had an aperture for winding and may have been marked with Turkish numerals. The style of the present one suggests it may have been made for it by local craftsmen who often added third or fourth cases to watches.

Although there is no dedication on the watch the portrait is undoubtedly of Queen Victoria in her youth. She appears to be wearing a wedding dress and we believe this watch commemorates her wedding to Albert. It is strange he is not represented; perhaps there was a companion gentleman's watch with his portrait.

A historically important piece. It is one of the earliest surviving pieces by John Arnold and the only example at the address of Plymouth Docks. The movement was fitted with a new dial and case in 1796. It is suggested that it was also converted from cylinder to duplex but this would have required a new lower balance cock. See 100 Years of Precision Timekeepers from John Arnold to Arnold and Frodsham 1763 - 1862 by Hans Staeger pages 40 and 41 where this watch is fully illustrated and described.
