An attractive and impressive piece. Elias Kreitmaier, Friedberg - Ca. 1700. Clocks in the Prague and Fitzwilliam Museums. Johann Kreitmaier, also of Friedberg, was the Court Clockmaker in Munich from 1663 to 1713. Apart from its large size this watch is also unusual in copying the style of watches made in the early 17th Century. Although furnished with a balance spring it has only one hand, the pendant and clip on the bezel also reflect an earlier style. The mechanism is well and substantially constructed and undoubtedly made to order, although for what reason is difficult to guess. Less importance seems to have been placed on the case which is of base metal.

A very unusual piece that resembles a verge watch of the period. The lack of temperature compensation would have stopped the watch from being used as an accurate timekeeper. There are also a number of extra screw holes close to the carriage for the detent showing that its final form was reached after a number of attempts. This may have been used as a test piece prior to making an accurate timekeeper with temperature compensation.

An interesting piece. The conversion to a pivoted detent has been carried out to a very high standard but has necessitated re-gilding the plates. The return spring is a spiral balance spring and fine adjustment for depthing is provided by a screw. The box is also of very good quality, probably made specially for use on board a small ship. Robert Pennington, 1780 - 1824 An eminent chronometer maker who was employed with others at the end of the 18th Century by Thomas Mudge junior to produce marine chronometers to his fathers (complicated) design. He introduced the use of screws in replacement of weights on the balance.

An unusual piece. It was not common for English watches of the period to forego the use of a fusee and chain. This maker, who had the movement engraved "Inventor" may have done so purely to allow the watch to run for a longer period (probably eight days). It also has the advantage in allowing the watch to be wound in the normal direction.
