An interesting watch with complex indications. Swiss watches of this period are rare, as are any watches with astronomical indications. This movement has survived without undergoing major alterations that have disfigured it. The case is a very good match in period and origin. The dial of this watch echoes English verge watches produced over a hundred years earlier. These had silver champleve dials and only a minute hand. As the disc rotated it would indicate the hour by a pointer on the sun or the moon. In this watch the time is shown in the normal way by two hands, the disc being only decorative as the hours are not marked at its edge. It is therefore a little more complicated than the earlier type having extra motion work under the dial. A very rare (and surprisingly original) watch, it is the only one we have seen.

This is somewhat of a mystery. The movement appears to have undergone some minor alterations, the silver sector index is probably a later "improvement". The number of the movement does not fit with any of the known series and the style of the dial, which has the name and numbered fired into it, is more in keeping with that of 1830. One possible explanation is that John Roger Arnold took the watch in part exchange and decided that it was worthy of resale under his own name. To this end he updated the index, replaced the barrel bridge and had a new dial made; it may even have had a new case. John and John Roger Arnold were known to have resold their own work again after refurbishment.
