Rarely used until it was taken up by Lancashire makers early in the 19th Century. See Chamberlain's "Its About Time" page 123 for a description of a similar escapement. This example is unusual being Irish and is of much higher quality than normal found. It has screw adjustment for the depth of the escapement and a high train count. The price reflects the later case and dial.

The case for this watch would have replaced the original gold hunter one it was in. It was not uncommon for high quality movements to have their gold cases replaced by new silver one, the owner receiving both a new case and some money from the case maker. The extra expense of making a hunter case, which would have been almost twice as expensive due the cost of the extra lid and springs, was spared in this instance. It is possible the gold from the case went toward the war effort.
