Unlike some of the later Swiss watches that included a compass, which was of little use beyond its novelty value, this piece is an attempt at a usable instrument. The movement uses as few steel components as possible. The screws, case latch and balance are of gilt brass. The design also tries to minimize the magnetic effect of the largest steel components, the mainspring, barrel arbor and chain, by placing the compass centrally above the barrel.

As this in turn drives the centre seconds hand the watch appears to beat seconds. The seconds hand can be stopped by pulling the winding button out slightly and started by depressing it. Pierre Morand, Paris, 1782-9. It is difficult to describe how small the movement of this watch
is. To try to put it in some perspective:- with an overall diameter of only 11.5 mm it would fit
within the contrate wheel of most watches of the period. Because of its size the wheel have
fewer teeth than normal and therefore an extra wheel has been added to the train. It is also
not capable of running for a full day, probably of only 12 hours duration. This would not be a
disadvantage for a watch that would only have been worn during the evening. This is the
smallest 18th Century watch we have seen by a considerable margin.

The logistics of ordering stock from England in the 18th Century must have been difficult and lengthy. This movement may have been entirely finished in England or bought as a rough ebauche and finished locally. Antigua was an important and relatively wealthy colony in the 18th Century.
