Solomon Bouquet, 1680. Clockmakers Company 1683 - 1700. Watch in the British Museum. A very early example of a watch with balance spring made in the style of pre-balance spring examples and without minute hand. The few mechanical changes made to it have left little impression on the fabric of the watch. They were probably carried out when the outer case was made as a replacement for the simple leather box which would have protected the watch up until that time.

The King's patent no. 2351 was granted to Ralph Gout in 1799. See the Camerer Cuss Book of Antique Watches page 160 for a pedometer watch for use on a horse. It is difficult to be certain whether this watch was originally constructed with the pedometer mechanism and the dial made for it later (it is retained by two feet in their original positions). Alternatively the mechanism may never have been completed and a scene used on the dial to occupy the space left.

This watch demonstrates the practise of the horological trade from the 18th Century of producing watches for sale by retailers. The maker was confident he would be selling it to a retailer in London and so had the main plate of the watch engraved at the same time as the cock. The barrel bridge however was left blank. This part could easily be removed without the need to dismantle the watch and be engraved with the name of the retailer, another watchmaker, or even the purchaser of the watch.
