The technique used to decorate the outer case is very unusual, if not unique. It would have been very difficult to make and the work has been executed superbly. The design naturally leaves small apertures and the case does not need any further piercing to allow the sound of the bell to be heard. The visual effect created is striking and very attractive. It is possble that of the two names on the movement one is responsible for the case..

A very rare and unusual piece, watches using a cylinder for the music in place of a disc are uncommon. Charles Reuge was born in Buttes and spent many years developing these watches in Sainte-Croix. He used the musical cylinder from Piguets & Meylans of Geneva. The watches were fitted with various styles of automata, most commonly a variation of the violinist on this piece. Reuge found many difficulties in their manufacture, managing only to produce about a hundred pieces. In 1960 the company again produced a musical watch using a wrist watch movement and a far more ambitious automated scene. See "A. Chapuis, "Histoire de la boite a musique"

A very rare and unusual watch. The Japanese based their method of timekeeping on a Chinese system which is somewhat eccentric, the length of their periods of time altering throughout the year. Each 24 hour day is divided into its two natural sections, day and night. These are then divided into six equal parts. This necessitates allowing mechanical timekeepers to have adjustable markings. Timepieces made for the Japanese market are rare. This is the only example of a clockwatch we have seen. The case itself is also somewhat odd, being large and deep. It would have originally had a protective case or box made of leather or perhaps wood.
