A piece of historic significance being one of the earliest known eight day chronometers. It is essentially a Marine chronometer in an oversized pocket watch case somewhat reminiscent of Harrison's No. 4 and its copies. It is unclear how the chronometer would have been kept on board ship but most probably in a cushioned box without the benefit of gimbals. A plugged hole in the cover aligned with the winding square would suggest that at some time it was housed in a purpose made box with a sprung shutter. There are a number of sight holes in the plates to allow inspection of depthing of the wheels. The only alteration to the mechanism appears to be a change to the dust collar of the winding square. Unlike many of its contemporaries which were substantially modified and improved, the mechanism, including the balance is original.
George Margetts Clockmakers Company 1779, died 1808. He was a famous maker of the late 18th Century. He was in the circle of English horologists experimenting with precision timekeeping, such as Mudge, Emery, Arnold, Earnshaw, Kendal, Brockbank, Barraud, Pennington and Haley. Along with Emery he was one of the first to develop Mudge's lever escapement, improving it by introducing the "crank lever"

The following models are constructed almost entirely from pierced and engraved watch cocks taken from 18th and 19th verge watches. The panels have been skilfully hard soldered to form the larger sheets of the models. The wheels on the carriages and car are also formed from the tables of cocks and rotate on wire axels. While we do have some misgivings about the hundreds of watches sacrificed in these models they are perhaps a better use than the necklaces that are so often the fate of these cocks. We believe that they are all the work of one man.
