This watch probably owned by William Pitt, the younger (1759-1806), prime minister of Great Britain (1783-1801 and 1804-6). He entered parliament in 1781, the date of this watch. It may have been given to him to commemorate the event. Watches bearing dials where the numerals are replaced by letters are commonly thought to be the owners name. It is confirmed in this instance by the monogram on the case and the maker finding it necessary to add "Fecit" to the signature which is unusual at this period.
