1 RARE 17th CENTURY SILVER ENGLISH VERGE UKP 3850

A rare late 17th Century English verge with silver crucifix and visible mock pendulum in silver pair cases. Reversed deep full plate fire gilt movement with a chased and engraved silver plaque on the back depicting Christ on the cross. Around this an engraved border with the makers signature and the legend "INRI" at the top. At the outer edge of the movement a square to regulate the balance spring on the opposite plate. Four pillars each with a two headed bird of chased and engraved silver fixed by a single screw. Fusee and chain. One arm of the steel balance visible through an aperture in the signed silver champleve dial. The winding square by 12 o'clock, Roman and Arabic numerals, blue steel beetle and poker hands. Matching silver pair cases, silver pendant and bow, maker's mark "IH".

A very rare watch. The movement is constructed with the train going in the reverse direction to normal to allow the balance to show through the dial. The fusee, escape wheel and verge staff are mirrored in respect to a normal verge movement and the contrate wheel travels in the opposite direction.

2 SILVER CHAMPLEVE DIAL ENGLISH CALENDAR VERGE UKP 2450

A late 17th Century English verge with silver champleve dial in silver pair cases. Deep full plate fire gilt movement with Egyptian pillars. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Unusual pierced and engraved winged cock with two masks, one at the base of the table and the other in the centre. Pierced and engraved foot and plate for the silver regulator disc. Plain steel balance. Signed silver champleve dial with Roman and Arabic numerals. Small square aperture below the signature showing the date, fine blue steel tulip and poker hands. Matching plain silver pair cases, maker's mark "IW".

4 SILVER ENGLISH VERGE with ENAMELLED COCK UKP 3500

A rare English verge with an enamelled cock and silver champleve dial in silver pair cases. Deep full plate fire gilt movement with Egyptian pillars. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Gilt bridge cock set with a fine polychrome enamel plaque depicting a scantily clad lady and an admiring onlooker. Silver regulator disc. Plain steel balance with an affixed gold heart which oscillates when the watch is running. Winding through the signed silver champleve dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, blue steel beetle and poker hands. Silver pair cases, the inner with a large glazed aperture at the back to reveal the enamel plaque. The silver outer case also with an aperture.

Full plate fire gilt movement with signed and numbered gilt dust cover pierced to reveal the pierced and engraved cock and silver regulator disc. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring, diamond endstone in a polished steel setting. English table roller lever escapement, probably converted from cylinder. Fully restored white enamel dial with Arabic numerals,gold hands. Matching gold pair cases, gold pendant and bow. Number corresponding to that on the movement and maker's mark "IM".

17 SILVER DOUBLE SIDED WORLD TIME WATCH UKP 2500

A rare double sided Swiss lever giving world time indication in a silver and silver gilt case. Gilt split three quarter plate keyless movement with going barrel. Plain cock with polished steel regulator, compensation balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Club foot lever escapement. Signed white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Arabic numerals, pierced gilt hands. On the opposite side a white enamel dial marked with numerous cities around the world. The central enamel disc divided into two sections, one white with black numerals and the other white with black numerals. This disc rotates once every 24 hours. The time of day or night in any of the cities can be then read on this disc. Plain silver open face case with silver gilt bezels and bow, gilt winding crown.

A rare Swiss double sided lever with seven world time dials and calendar in a silver open face case. Keyless gilt bar movement with going barrel. Plain cock with polished steel regulator. Club foot lever escapement. Compensation balance with blue steel hairspring. White enamel dial marked "Greenwich Time", combined subsidiary seconds and month, subsidiaries for day, date and moonphase. Roman numerals, blue steel hands. On the opposite side of the watch seven small chapters with Roman numerals marked "Paris - New York - St Petersburg - Calcutta - Melbourne - Vienna - Berlin". Substantial plain silver open face case, thumb sets for the time and calendar in the band.

A late 19th Century split seconds Swiss chronograph in a gold open face case. Nickelled three quarter plate keyless movement with going barrel. Plain cock with polished steel micrometer regulator, compensation balance with blue steel overcoil hairspring. Club foot lever escapement. Grained steel flyback chronograph work above the plate, the split seconds work under the dial. White enamel dial with centre seconds split chronograph, subsidiary seconds, black Roman and red Arabic numerals, blue steel hands. Substantial engine turned 14 carat open face case with ribbed middle. Signed gold cuvette, depressing the winding crown operates the flyback chronograph and the button in the band for the split hand.

An early 20th Century American 21 Jewel lever by Hamilton in a gold filled open face case. High quality 992 model damascened nickelled split three quarter plate keyless movement with going barrel. Plain cock with polished steel regulator. Compensation balance with blue steel overcoil hairspring. Club foot lever escapement, screwed in gold set jewelling, escape and lever pivots with endstones. Gold train wheels. Signed three piece white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, bold black Arabic numerals and red minute markings, blue steel hands. Gold filled Keystone open face case with screw back and bezel, ribbed middle. On the back of the case an engraved steam locomotive with cow catcher at the front.

A fine English freesprung keyless fusee by Barraud & Lunds in a gild full hunter case. Gilt half plate keyless movement with fusee and chain, engraved raised barrel. Harrison's maintaining power. Engraved cock with diamond endstone. Freesprung compensation balance with blue steel double overcoil hairspring. English double roller lever escapement. Screwed in jewelling, escape and lever pivots with endstones. Signed and numbered white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Substantial plain 18 carat full hunter case with two fly-springs, thief proof swivel bow and the crown winding disabled when the front cover is closed. Gold cuvette pierced to allow the watch to be wound and set by key and a dedication dated 1919, monogram on the back cover. Number corresponding to that on the movement and maker's mark "JW & Co" in a rectangle.

A very fine and usable watch. Only one later watch and movement by Barraud & Lunds are listed in Jaeger's book on Paul Philip Barraud. This may have been one of the last examples of high quality hand made English work as the skills required were lost in the first World War. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Pierced and engraved winged cock with mask and diamond endstone, pierced and engraved foot. Plain steel balance, silver regulator disc. Later white enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, blue steel beetle and poker hands. Silver pair cases, the inner hallmarked London 1789. The outer decorated with chased and engraved repousse work depicting three figures in a rococo frame.

An early 18th Century converted verge in gold pair cases with a repousse outer. Full plate fire gilt movement with square baluster pillars. Pierced and engraved masked cock with large diamond endstone, silver regulator disc. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Plain three arm balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Converted to English table roller lever escapement and Harrison's maintaining power added. Purpose made white enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, later blue steel hands. Plain inner case of 22 carat gold, maker's mark "ELC" in a rectangle. This disc has a serpent around its edge which rotates once a minute serving to indicate the seconds. Purpose made engine turned gilt metal consular case.

A very rare English lever watch with montre à tact in a slim gold open face case. Gilt three quarter plate keyless movement with going barrel, Nicole's patent steel winding work above the plate. Engraved cock with polished steel regulator, compensation balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. English lever escapement. Small engine turned gold dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Substantial engine turned 18 carat open face case with clip on back, gold crown and bow. The small gold dial set within a wide bezel which has a hand that can be rotated clockwise until it reaches the position of the hour hand. The can then be used to tell the time by using touch pieces set at the hours on the engine turned middle. The touch pieces at 11 o'clock is also used to set the time. Maker's mark "AN" in a rectangle, number matching that on the movement.

The watch was probably manufactured for Dent by the firm of Nicole Nielsen. Adolphe Nicole took out the patent for keyless winding in 1844. The winding lever protrudes through the inner dome of the case, engaging a ratchet mounted on the fusee square via a sprung pawl. The watch is wound by moving this lever backwards and forwards. The hands are set by moving a wheel at the edge of the dial. White enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, blue steel hands. Plain silver open face case with gold hinges and ribbed middle. The back cover which is decorated with a vacant cartouche set within a circle is opened by depressing a button in the pendant. Maker's mark "EH" and number corresponding to that on the movement.

Plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Polished steel cylinder, steel escape wheel. White enamel dial with subsidiaries for seconds, day, date, month and moonphase. Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Nickel bezels with pin sets for the calendar. The back glass a hemi-sphere with a flat portion allowing the clock to stand on a table.

A Swiss lever with a dial depicting a two cowboys in a gilt metal mounted glass ball. Gilt split three quarter plate keyless movement with going barrel. Plain cock with polished steel regulator, uncut bimetallic balance with spiral hairspring. Club foot lever escapement. Painted dial depicting a an outlaw hold a bag of money being arrested by a sheriff. The sheriff is drawing a pistol which is mounted on the lever arbor and so moves back and forth as the clock runs. Small Arabic numerals, blue steel hands. Enclosed in a glass sphere in two halves mounted in gilt metal bezels set with large pastes, the back glass with a flat portion allowing the clock to stand on a table.
