44 RARE SILVER QUARTER REPEATER UKP 1350
An early 19th Century verge with very rare quarter repeating mechanism in a silver open face
case. Full plate gilt fusee movement, polished steel Geneva stop work and repeating pawl on the
plate. Finely pierced and engraved bridge cock with polished steel endstone, plain three arm gilt
balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Silver regulator dial with blue steel indicator. Round
pillars. Rare and unusual form of quarter repeating striking on a single gong under the dial. The
repeat work is driven by the mainspring of the going train which is setup by a ratchet attached to
the actuator. Unlike other systems the repeat mechanism is fully wound every time it is used, the
quarter touch piece only being released at the end of travel. There is no snail for the hours, the
repeating ratchet being stopped by one of two clicks at the appropriate hour. This is then at rest
until it is gathered by the arm on its return. The watch, after a short period of silence, repeats the
hours and two blows for each quarter. As the arm finishes its travel the hammer is lifted by the
quarter touch piece, ready to be used again. White enamel dial with Arabic numerals, blue steel
Breguet hands. Substantial plain silver open face case, silver repeating slide, gilt metal cuvette.

M7 RARE FRENCH CYLINDER REPEATER UKP 525
A very rare 18th Century quarter repeating cylinder movement by Lepine utilizing wolf's teeth

rimmed three arm gilt balance with three internal screws, blue steel spiral hairspring. Steel
cylinder and escape wheel, polished steel coquerets to the escape and third wheel pivots. Key set
from the back. All wheels and pinions have the wolf's tooth form of gearing. This gearing is
normally only found on the steel winding wheels of high quality late 19th century Swiss watches;
here it has been used from the going barrel to the fly on the repeat train and also the repeating
rack. Fine polished steel repeating work of an individual design. Only one large polished steel
hammer is used. It strikes twice for each quarter but is lifted less for one of the blows.
Repeating on a blue steel gong. All of the repeating train, the centre and second wheels under
one bridge.
Circa 1760
Diameter 49.5 mm
Condition Excellent, working. Lacking dial.
This movement incorporates three features whose invention is attributed to J. A. Lepine. These
are the suspended barrel, the rack to wind the repeating train and the use of wolf's teeth gearing.
The first two were readily adopted by continental makers. The use of wolf's teeth gearing is
normally only found on high quality keyless watches for the winding wheels. The advantage of
using this gearing is a smoother transmission of power together with greater strength. The gains
made by using it were found to be out-weighed by the increased complication in cutting them.
To find its use throughout both trains of a repeater is surprising. Although unsigned this is
undoubtedly the work of Lepine. See Jean Antoine Lepine by Adolphe Chapiro page 212 for a
similar watch.
