Business Titles and Addresses |
| Although the firm changed its title and address a number of times all watches appear to be signed either only "London" or later "Royal Exchange, London". Britten notes the address as being 97 Cornhill until 1838 when the Royal Exchange was destroyed by fire. The records examined and a watch certificate issued on 12th January 1827 indicate the firm was already established at 32 Cornhill before the fire. The certificate is to a Wm Braddon, Esq for a duplex watch No. 11665. The address of the firm at that time is given as 32 Royal Exchange (Cornhill). |
| Charles Strachan was given Freedom of the Clockmakers' Company by
Redemption in February 1815. He gave his address as 97 Cornhill which was
McCabe's address. In 1817 he became a partner with James Murray and in 1819 he
was admitted to the Livery of the Clockmaker's Company. In 1822 he parted
company with James Murray and in 1824 became a partner with the McCabes. The
only items known to be signed McCabes & Strachan are marine chronometers.
