Savage Two Pin Lever Escapement

George Savage invented the two pin lever escapement in 1814 but did not patent it. Technically it is superior to the table roller escapement as the impulse is given more closely to the theoretically correct point in the action. However in practice the gold pins were found to wear quickly. Sometimes a wide impulse jewel is used. The Savage two pin lever is distinguished from other two pin lever escapements by the narrow safety notch. In other types this is the more normal crescent.

George Savage was born and worked in Huddersfield. He later moved to Clerkenwell, London, where he worked as a watch finisher. He took out a patent for a remontoir in 1808 and was awarded the large silver medal of the Society of Arts in 1822 for his invention. He settled in Canada, probably in 1823 where he died 20 years later.
