Index No. A8633 Unusual Silver Quarter Repeating Virgule
An unusual late 18th Century French quarter repeating virgule in a silver open face case.  Keywind gilt movement with both the going and repeating trains under a single small bridge similar to watches by  Lepine.  Suspended going barrel with blue steel stopwork. Engraved sector cock with blue steel regulator, garnet endstone. Plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring.  Rare virgule escapement, brass escape wheel.  Push pendant quarter repeating on two rectangular blue steel gongs.  Fully restored white enamel dial with Roman numerals, blue steel hands.  Purpose made engine turned silver open face case with engine turned middle, hallmark London 1838.  Wound and set through the gilt metal cuvette signed for the English retailer.

Very few virgule watches were made as the balance staff is very difficult to manufacture and delicate.  Used mainly by the French it ceased to be used afer the early 19th Century.
