Index No. A8152 Rare Silver Swiss Chronometer
A rare 19th Century Swiss patent chronometer in a silver open face case.  Keywind gilt bar movement with suspended going barrel.  Plain cock with polished steel regulator.  Plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring.  Rare form of chronometer escapement, the steel lever forming the detent engages with a pin on the balance.  Two steel pins set close together on its upper surface pass through a slot in the underside of the escape wheel teeth allowing one tooth to pass on every oscillation of the balance.  The tip of the tooth gives impulse directly to a pallet on the balance staff.  Signed white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel hands.  Engine turned silver open face case with ribbed middle.  Wound and set through the gilt metal cuvette marked "Brevete - SCDC", maker's mark "EE".
SignedA Sautter
Circa 1870
Diameter 45 mm
A very rare escapement.  It is unclear why it was developed as the watch has no pretensions to be a precision timepiece.  Probably Johann Adam Sautter, 1820 - 1902, Ravensburg.
