Index No. A8006 Silver Champleve Dial Turkish Market Verge
An unusually small 18th Century English verge made for the Turkish market with rare enamel and silver champleve dial in silver pair cases.  Deep full plate fire gilt movement, Egyptian pillars with pierced galleries above.  Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates.  Pierced and engraved winged cock with pierced and engraved foot.  Plain steel balance, silver regulator disc.  Rare dial layout, the white enamel centre signed in polychrome enamel and silver champleve ring of Turkish numerals, crescents separating the them.  Fine blue steel beetle and poker hands.  Plain silver pair cases, silver oval pendant and decorative stirrup bow.  Inner case with number corresponding to that on the movement.
SignedMarkwick Markham    London
Circa 1735
Diameter 41 mm
Depth 14 mm
A rare watch in outstanding overall condition.  James Markwick and Robert Markham from circa 1725.  The signature and variations were used on watches for the Turkish market until the 19th Century.  The absence of hallmarks indicates this watch was made before the Plate Offences Act of 1738 after which only very small articles were exempt.
