Index No. A7239 Rare Centre Seconds Pirouette
A very rare late 18th Century Austrian cylinder pirouette fitted in a silver full hunter case.  Full plate gilt fusee movement.  The small plain three arm gilt balance situated between the plates is carried on a pinion which engages with a small wheel which can be seen through a semi-circular aperture in the plate, the regulator at its edge.  This wheel is carried on the cylinder together with the blue steel spiral hairspring.   The large (approx 20 mm diameter) brass cylinder escape wheel is under the centrally placed pierced and engraved bridge cock with blue steel coqueret.  The seconds arbor is on the escape wheel pinion which runs through the hollow centre pinion.  Domed white enamel dial with centre seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel seconds hand, gilt hands. Well fitted in an early 19th Century English plain silver full hunter case.

A very rare and interesting watch.  The pirouette is a design where the balance is mounted on a pinion meshed to a wheel which takes the place of the balance in a standard watch.  The effect of this is that the balance rotates up to three full turns as well as faster while at the same time the escapement runs at a slower rate.  See Chamberlain's "Its About Time". Page 150 and  the "Camerer Cuss Book of Antique Watches",  page 208 for watches with a pirouette.  Johan Hubner - Vienna, master 1793.
