| A very rare early 19th Century English cylinder by Roskell with Berrolla's patent quarter repeating in a gold open face case. Full plate gilt keywind fusee movement. Harrison's maintaining power. Engraved cock with diamond endstone, plain three arm steel balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Bimetallic temperature compensation curb to the blue steel Bosley regulator. Polished steel cylinder, large steel escape wheel, pivots with endstones. Berrolla's patent twist pendant quarter repeating on two steel gongs. White enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, gilt hands. Plain 18 carat open face case with ribbed middle, maker's mark "TH". Wound through the signed and numbered gold cuvette also engraved "Patent Repeater". | ||

| J A Berrola took out his patent (No 3174) for this unusual form of repeating work in 1808. The hours are sounded by twisting the pendant clockwise which moves the pendant away from the case. In doing so it draws with it the hour rack until the touch piece is stopped by the hour snail. Returning the pendant by rotating it anti- clockwise returns the hour rack and at the same time the quarter rack to repeat the quarters. See the Camerer Cuss Book of Antique Watches page 216 for watch number 10030 by Roskell. This is a rack lever with Berrolla's patent repeating work. Please note although this watch has been given a hallmark date of 1832 this is probably erroneous or a later made case. The series of hallmarks for the two series of years are almost identical and it is unlikely that two watches so similar in design and close in number would have been made 20 years apart. |
