Index No. A7026 Silver Pair Cased Verge with Railway Dial
A very large early 19th Century English verge with polychrome enamel railway scene in silver pair cases.  Full plate fusee movement with gilt dust cover.  Unusual shaped cock engraved with a squirrel fitting the aperture in the dust cover the section covering the balance decoratively engraved.  Gilt regulator on top plate below the plain three arm steel balance.  Lateral steel stop lever.  Purpose made white enamel dial with Roman numerals.  At the centre a finely painted scene at the centre depicting a green passenger train passing under a bridge, a horseman riding up the far bank, blue steel hands.  Matching silver pair cases, oval pendant and bow, maker's mark "JW" in an oval.
SignedJas Burton     London
Circa 1816
Diameter 64 mm
The watch originally would have been fitted with subsidiary seconds.  The current dial has been made for the watch in the 1840's to depict the new form of railway transport and is very well painted.  The unusually large size of the dial and lack of any earlier holes in the plate show that it has been made for the watch rather than found for it later.
