| A late 17th Century verge with silver champleve dial in silver pair cases and a stand in the form of a bracket clock. Deep full plate fire gilt movement, Egyptian pillars with pierced galleries above. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Pierced and engraved winged cock with mask, pierced and engraved foot. Plain steel balance, silver regulator disc. Signed silver champleve dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, blue steel beetle and poker hands. Plain silver pair cases, silver pendant and ring bow. Inner case with maker's mark "I D" below a crown. Small wooden stand in the form of red and gilt japanned bracket clock, a cast pierced mask surrounding the dial of the watch. | ||

| A very attractive piece. The signature is very unusual. We have recently been contacted about Boutreux Castle. It appears to refer to Bottreaux Castle in Cornwall. The castle has long since vanished, leaving only a few ruins. The present village of Boscastle dervies its name from the original spelling of the name. It is possible the watch was made for the occasion of a marriage between a member of the Hender family and the Amy family at the castle. The Hender and Amy families have long been settled in the area. For example, roughly contemporary to the watch, in 1715 one Edward Amy was sheriff of Cornwall. Similarly, the Hender family has is known to have lived there for as long as records are extant. It would be unusual for a watchmaker to be based in a castle. The engraver has also split "Boutreux" in an odd place on the movement. |
