| An early 19th Century English pocket chronometer by John Roger Arnold in a gold open face case. Full plate gilt keywind fusee movement with blue steel mainspring setup work on the barrel bridge. Harrison's maintaining power. Plain cock with diamond endstone, unusual "Z" type balance with adjustment thread on both ends of the rims. Freesprung helical blue steel hairspring. Arnold type spring detent chronometer escapement, the detent in a slot in the plate, escape pivots with endstones. Signed and numbered white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel seconds hand, gold hands. Fitted in a contemporary plain 18 carat open face case hallmarked 1817. | ||

| An interesting Arnold chronometer. The balance is unusual in having threaded sections at both ends of the bimetallic rims. The only other example we can find is number 2140 (just three later) which is a half quarter repeater. It has weights on all four threaded sections, unlike this one which has only two. 2140 is illustrated in Hans Staeger's book although he makes no mention about the rarity of the balance. |
