Index No. A6520 Enamelled Centre Seconds English Verge
A late 18th Century English centre seconds verge in gilt metal and enamel pair cases for the Chinese market.  Full plate fire gilt movement with fusee and chain.  Pierced and engraved cock, silver regulator disc. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring.  Convex white enamel dial with centre seconds,  Roman and Arabic numerals, later blue steel seconds hand, gilt beetle and poker hands. Gilt metal pair cases, plain inner, maker's mark "WC".  Outer case with engraved gilt bezels, the front set with a row of green paste stones alternating with split pearls.  The back set with a finely painted polychrome enamel scene depicting a woman and two young children.

William Carpenter, free of the Clockmakers Company 1770 - 1805.  He was renowned for the manufacture of watches and clocks for the Chinese and Indian markets.  Many of these had automatons and other complications.
