Index No. A78 41 Rare Minute Repeating Gold English Hunter
A 19th Century minute repeating lever of unusual design  in a gold full hunter case.  Gilt three quarter plate keyless movement with going barrel. Engraved cock with polished steel regulator, diamond endstone. Compensation balance with blue steel overcoil hairspring. English table roller lever escapement.  Screwed in jewelling, escape and lever pivots with endstones.  Very rare design of minute repeating work with a separate minute snail of fifteen steps rotating four times and hour mounted on an arbor with a star wheel. Slide repeating on two polished steel gongs.  Signed white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel hands.  Plain 18 carat full hunter case, gold cuvette and recessed gold slide, maker's mark "JM" in an oval.  The lever hand set unusually cancelled when the front cover is closed.

An excellent example of an early keyless watch with an interesting and rare variation of minute repeating work.  Although a little more complex than a standard minute repeater it does enable the minutes to be given far more accurately.  We have only seen one other earlier watch employing this design.
