Index No. M6548 Keyless Fusee Chronometer by Kullberg
A fine large late 19th Century English keyless fusee chronometer with power reserve indication by Kullberg in a gold open face case.  Gilt half plate keyless movement with reverse fusee and chain. Harrison's maintaining power. Plain cock with diamond endstone.  Compensation balance employing quarter timing nuts, freesprung helical blue steel hairspring.  Earnshaw type spring detent escapement, escape pivots with endstones. Very unusual sprung polished steel bar which is held down by the foot of the cock.  When the balance cock is removed it is released and engages with the third wheel, locking the train. This avoids any major accident that might occur by the detent being released when the balance is removed.  Signed and numbered white enamel dial with subsidiaries for power reserve and  seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel hands.  Substantial large plain 18 carat open face case, maker's mark "FT" in an oval.  To wind the watch the pin in the band must be depressed and to set the hands a lever under the back cover.  Accompanied by a photograph of the page from Kullberg's records showing the workmen employed and prices charged.
SignedVictor Kullberg   105 Liverpool Road   London 7066 - 5 Diplomas of Honour, 10 Gold Medals Awarded - Grand Prix Paris 1900
Hallmarked London 1900
Diameter 59 mm
A very fine and impressive English chronometer by this famous maker.  It has many of the features that make English precision watches of the period so desirable.  Manufactured in the same year as the Prize was awarded in Paris, it is possible it was this particular watch that won the prize, the engraving about the prizes added afterwards.  The records show the chronometer ebauche originated in Preston and was finished by Lundquist who also made and fitted the automatic stop.  The dial was made by Willis and hands by Hood.  The case made by Thoms bears his mark, cost almost œ14.  A considerable sum at the time!
