Index No. A5346 Early Silver Champleve Dial Repeater
A late 17th century English quarter repeating verge in pierced and engraved silver pair cases. Deep full plate fire gilt movement with decorative turned baluster pillars. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Pierced and engraved winged cock with mask, a further mask and two birds depicted on the table, small pierced and engraved foot. Plain steel balance with two arms and a counterbalance to allow for the winding square. Silver regulator disc on a pierced and engraved plate. Push pendant quarter repeating on bell in the back of the case. Engraved repeating barrel and the arbors for the hammers decoratively turned. Signed silver champleve dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, blue steel tulip and poker hands. Deep engraved edge to the dial plate and engraved gilt border to the dial matching a decorative border on the outer case. Decoratively pierced and engraved silver pair cases, split bezel to the inner. Seven joint square hinge to the outer, maker's mark "WG".

A very good example of an early repeating English watch. One of the first repeating watches was made by Tompion to a design of Barlow about 1685. See the Camerer Cuss Book of Antique Watches page 86 & 87 for an eight day watch by Garon (No. 481). Peter Garon, apprenticed 1687, Free of the Clockmakers Company 1694 and bankrupt 1709.
