The unusual cock is said to allow the balance assembly to be quickly replaced in the field by workmen of limited ability. In rough service the balance pivots were prone to damage and rather than sending the whole watch to be repaired the cock, spring and balance could be changed and the damaged assembly only returned. It also enables the escapement to be simply put into beat by loosening the dog screws and rotating the cock. This is one of the few English watches to be "mass produced" with interchangeable components and shows the influence of American manufacture, including the use of screw bezels.
