A late 18th Century continental mock pendulum verge in silver and tortoiseshell pair cases. Full plate gilt fusee movement. Engraved bridge cock with semi-circular aperture revealing the bob on one arm of the two arm gilt balance imitating the pendulum of a clock. Silver regulator dial with blue steel indicator. Pentagonal baluster pillars. Crude silvered metal dial with Roman numerals, gilt hands. Silver consular inner case with chased and engraved decoration on the back of flags, cannons and other military motifs. The protective outer with scalloped edge covered in tortoiseshell and decorated with silver pique pins.
SignedNorton - London
ConditionCirca 1790
CaseExcellent, but the inner drilled later to allow the watch to be wound.
DialVery good. Diameter 67 mm
MovementVery good.
An unusual watch which bears a resemblance to those made for the Turkish market. The dial is a later replacement. The original would have had an aperture for winding and may have been marked with Turkish numerals. The style of the present one suggests it may have been made for it by local craftsmen who often added third or fourth cases to watches.
