Index No. A4749 EXPERIMENTAL ENGLISH 18th CENTURY POCKET CHRONOMETER

An unusual late 18th Century experimental chronometer with regulator dial in silver pair cases. Full plate fire gilt movement with signed and numbered gilt dust cover. Pierced and engraved cock with diamond endstone, the foot cut straight at the edge to allow for the makers signature. Engraved gilt plate with silver regulator disc. Fusee and chain with Harrison's maintaining power, the high quality train with six spoke crossings. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Experimental pivoted detent escapement with a large gilt brass escape wheel. Signed white enamel regulator dial with subsidiaries for hours and seconds, the minutes read at the edge, Roman and Arabic numerals, blue steel hands. Matching silver pair cases, silver pendant and bow, lateral steel stop lever, maker's mark "TG".

A very unusual piece that resembles a verge watch of the period. The lack of temperature compensation would have stopped the watch from being used as an accurate timekeeper. There are also a number of extra screw holes close to the carriage for the detent showing that its final form was reached after a number of attempts. This may have been used as a test piece prior to making an accurate timekeeper with temperature compensation.
