| Index No. A4323 | GOLD & ENAMEL WATCH in the FORM of an URN |
A late 18th Century French verge in a fine gold and enamel pearl set case in the form of an urn. Full plate gilt fusee movement. Finely pierced and engraved bridge cock with steel coqueret, plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Silver regulator dial with blue steel indicator. Winding through the signed white enamel dial Arabic numerals, later gilt hands. Fine gold and enamel case in the form of an urn. The front in dark blue and white enamel, the dial of the watch surrounded by a row of split pearls. Rows of split pearls also decorate the base, top and handles. The front face of the body is hinged to allow access to the movement for winding and hand set. On the reverse a polychrome enamel scene of Arab sailing dhows. Octagonal flat base hinged to reveal a small compartment, perhaps for a key.
A fine and unusual case of very good quality. The flat base allows it to be stood on a flat surface (albeit a little precariously) and used as a table timepiece.
