An unusual Austrian verge in a crucifix form case. Shaped full plate movement with square baluster pillars. Pierced and engraved cock, fusee and gut with blue steel barrel ratchet setup and spring on the decoratively engraved back plate. Plain three arm steel balance with hairspring. Engraved gilt dial, depicting Adam and Eve together with other scenes from the Old Testament. Small engraved silver chapter with Roman numerals, single blue steel hand. Unusual complex multi hinged silver case. All faces glazed and hinged to the main frame attached to the movement which can be exposed rather like opening the petals of a flower. Silver pendant and ring bow, turned finial.

A most unusual piece. It is not clear whether it was intended to deceive when made in the late 18th Century or if it were made as a piece of jewellery.
